Soldier Of Spring

With snow predicted for tomorrow, the garden trembles; yet one plant carries on as if nothing is amiss, blooming through rain and snow... it is hepatica nobilis, the liverwort. Pictured above is the variety japonica, but our native varieties acutiloba and obtusa are also troopers; true soldiers of spring.

Okay, you just HAD to post this, didn't you? I've said for a couple of years now that I want some blue hepatica and I haven't been able to find any. This is GORGEOUS!

I just planted one of these last fall. I am patiently waiting at this point.

I need to look this up, I guess. What's a "-wort?" There are lungwort, liverwort, St. John's wort, etc. I thought I'd ask you first! ;-)

Kylee... I especially like the snow-white backs of the petals combined with the bright blue!

Philip... it'll be back (I think).

Shady... "wort" just means "plant", so liverwort is the liver-plant (because of its three lobed leaves shaped (sorta) like a liver.

Now these truly are charming, and what a wonderful shade. I am tempting fate by mulling over the idea of a few of the truly double ones but egads....and me what a Champagne taste but only a Pepst salary..... I must go and see if mine has emerged.

Teza... I know what you mean about the prices for doubles!
