It's Off To The Woods!
The evergreen gingers are a somewhat reticent bunch in our climate; while a gratifying number of species are growing here, let's just say there is little danger of them spreading out into the yard and jamming up the lawnmower. I swear a few of the shyer ones haven't changed a whit in five years; I'm starting to harbor suspicions I've been sold some plastic gingers.
Then there is Asarum splendens, a grand species from China and the Himalayas with large arrowhead shaped leaves mottled and spotted with gray silver and dark green. I have read that there are two forms: one with a clumping growth pattern (shown above), and one which immediately spreads widely by long underground stolons, without clumping. Interestingly, I have one of each type and in their own way each is doing well. The spreading form in fact is spreading out of the flower bed, taking a right turn around a Japanese maple and heading off into the woods. It just might after all may have designs on the lawn.

You know I am filled with awe whenever I visit your blog at the plants you have in your garden

Karen... the scary thing is, in the 3 1/2 years I've had this blog, I've probably shown 10% of the plants in the garden.
Shady... it's safe to come back to Iowa; it's finally cooled off.
MS... That site is cool; it keeps changing, and right after the picture of this blog that you showed, it went to what looked like an impressionistic ladyslipper orchid.
