Awwww!
The hardy alstroemerias are blooming in the garden; this is Alstroemeria Sweet Laura. Ten years ago, if you had told me we could grow these mainstays of west coast gardens here in zone 5a Iowa, I would have snorted, but grow they do, with no coddling. They're not terribly spectacular, not terribly essential to the garden... not terribly anything, yet I'd still miss them if they weren't there. I'd certainly miss mentioning to my lovely sister-in-law, a master gardener who lives in an amazing garden on a scenic ridge between the ocean north of San Francisco and Tomales Bay, that "Oh, by the way, the alstroemerias are blooming... did yours ever recover from that blight?"
Alstroemerias also figure in one of those "cute" couple stories that Liz and I delight in telling our friends about repeatedly...when Liz and I became engaged, she was just learning about flowers and in choosing our wedding flowers, she discovered alstroemerias, and was able to remember the name by telling me "No matter what happens, I'll still marry yuh!" Awwww!

Love the cute story, Got a giggle out of it. Love this plant, but it supper aggressive in my area so I can't put it in. They are really beautiful, and there are so many new hybrids nowadays. Too much to choose from.
All the best, BOB

Bob... they'll never be a pest here... they just don't seem to form the impenetrable masses of roots that you see on the west coast.
