Epimedium Enchantress
Epimedium Enchantress is a hybrid from Britain, dolichostemon x leptorrhizum. In areas with milder winters than ours, it is evergreen, but even here its foliage continues to look attractive until about Christmas; in fact it gets better and better, as it gets shinier and darker as the weather gets colder, with prominent veination and crinkling, giving it a very striking appearance. We've already had several nights in the range of 8-12 degrees, and it still looks great. I do have it tucked into the side of a small ravine, so it gets some wind protection. It is not a tall plant, rising only about 6-8 inches, forming a nice, small clump. In the spring, as shown below, it has lilac flowers, and the leaves are quite different from the fall; the older leaves are dark green, and the newest foliage is light green with red speckling. I'm always tempted to say that if you're going to have one epimedium, that this or that plant should be the one to get (my favorite is always the one I'm looking at now), but I do know you would be quite happy with Enchantress; it is aptly named.
