Greyling Days

November in Iowa is all about greys: it is the cloudiest month, with day after day of low, grey clouds. The sun is so low in the sky, that colors become muted, as if the clouds have come down to the very ground. Still, the garden carries on cheerfully: here are Japanese maples flanking a magnolia. Posted by Picasa

Is that a star magnolia, sir? When I attempt to find my zone, I get two different answers, 4 or 5. The Morton Arb. says the Sweet Bay would grow here and I would love to have some of those, not as wonderful as a Magnolia Grandiflora, but wonderful all the same!

Sissy... It is, indeed, a star magnolia. Boy, I'd think sweet bay magnolia would be a real stretch for you, unless it's in a REALLY protected spot. I've got one here, that has survived two winters, but it pretty much loses all its leaves by spring (it's not particularly protected). There is supposed to be a much hardier cultivar, that I think is called 'New Hampshire'.
