Good Morning, Garden. Good Morning.... Deer??
Regular readers will know that I am obsessively smug about my garden critter barriers (six foot tall woven wire deer fence, two foot rabbit fence, one foot buried woven wire ground hog fence, two foot deep buried plastic mole barrier). I was therefore more than a little humbled to stroll into the garden this morning through one of the five large gates, gazing about smugly at my hidden oasis, and found myself staring into two big, brown, innocent eyes... a deer was placidly sunning itself, right by the pathway, smack-dab in the middle of the garden, as relaxed and comfortable as it could be. I opened up the front gate, and about had to shove the deer out of the garden. I haven't a clue how it got in; probably it just jumped the six foot fence, and proceeded to make itself at home. I must find those plans I made for a moat.

quzkgfI know how much those particular dear like to eat tulips but c'mon what harm can they do this time of year?
They can skin the bark off a tree if there's no tender buds (which would be leaves or flowers in spring). Once the herbaceous stuff is gone they will eat the (more expensive) woody stuff
I can completely understand your frustration. I, too, had deer in an area I thought was impervious to them. Oh well, what's gardening without problem solving?

The deer around here are so tame, it's almost funny... when you yell at them to get out of your garden, they just look at you, puzzled why you're upset. We have a buck around right now, that's HUGE, with a really nice rack; it worries me because I'm afraid hunters will try stalking it back here... I may have to wear orange for a while.
What a breathtaking scene! I don't see deer where I am although they are
around the wooded areas. I am so pleased that you nicely escorted and that's all! :)

I thought you needed at least an 8 foot fence to keep them out. 10 to be safe. We're still not certain that a 6 foot fence will contain my brother's dog who likes to jump.
Naturegirl... we try to live and let live here; one acre of our woods is fenced off for the garden, but the rest is for the critters.

Millionbells... you're right about the fence height. A lot of it, though is along a sharply sloped ravine, and part of it is backed up by tall arborvitaes. I know they CAN jump it if they really want, but this is the first time a deer actually did it... I'm kind of compromising between avoiding the concentration camp look, and risking the occasional deer visit.
