Golden Full Moon Maple
There are certain plants that are somehow so exotic, that it never ceases to surprise and delight me that we have them in our garden. The golden full moon maple (acer shirasawanum aureum) is one of those. It actually is quite hardy, but somehow has a finicky reputation... probably because it is expensive and slow growing. I bought ours as a more affordable, tiny plant with about four leafs, but it has done very well, surviving our drought last year that even killed some weeds (though not enough). Now, in my early gardening years, a beautiful yellow-leafed tree like this would have ended up with something like bright pink petunias planted in front of it. With time has come garden moderation and sophistication; my golden full moon maple now is tastefully esconced between a red azalea and a blue-leafed hosta.

Isn't it funny how our taste in color combinations change from year to year? That said, I would imagine that your full moon maple would have lent a whole lot of elegance even to the pink petunias. :) It's absolutely lovely.
