Athens Of The Midwest

The Midwest, and Iowa in particular, receive more than their fair share of disparaging comments about lack of culture; I'll have you know that Iowa City is an unheralded bastion of good taste and appreciation for the finer things; above is a picture from a parade here... eat your hearts out, Coasters. Posted by Picasa

I'm looking at the lively mix of architecture in the background... the styles range over decades in just that one shot - and it looks like the 50s or 60s update that somebody did actually works with the existing context... that's nearly unheard of, and very interesting the architectural scholar in me...
