The thin crocus leaves are individually quite insubstantial, like small blades of grass, but are bound together by the plant sheath when coming up, like binding a lot of little copper wires into a tough cable; the crocus leaves also have a somewhat hard, yellowish apex (plant tip) to help in penetrating hard soil.
