Clever Bulbs

Many people think I'm somewhat obsessed with observing and talking about bulbs as they first show their noses above the still half-frozen ground in the early spring. Well, to paraphrase Samuel Johnson (and who doesn't): show me a man who tires of seeing flower bulbs first appear in the spring, and I'll show you a man who's tired of gardening. I particularly like seeing the clever techniques these little plants have developed to enable their leaves to burrow up through ground that's still hard and icy (and in their native haunts, full of stones). Daffodils leaves, shown above, have a hard, yellowish tip, and the leaves are held pressed together, much as a swimmer holds his hands together over his head, diving. Posted by Picasa

Are your bulbs really up already? Despite the snowstorm?

Indeed they are, and really things are rather late this year... should have daffodils blooming in about ten days.
